Jax Quotes: Reid, Mahomes, Jones

CHIEFS HEAD COACH ANDY REID

ANDY REID: “Don’t really have a lot of injuries to talk about other than [OL Josh] Simmons
was sick before the game. Hit him quickly, and we just were being precautionary there.
Other than that, everybody came out okay. My hat goes off to Jacksonville. They did a nice
job. We obviously had 13 penalties to their four. Whether I agree with them or don’t agree
with them doesn’t matter, they called them. You have that many penalties, you give up field
position, you can out-stat them to death. but it doesn’t matter. It’s the score that matters
and we’ve got to take care of business there. So with that, time’s yours.”
Q. Andy, just the last defensive drive, what stands out to you?
ANDY REID: “They got a good starting point at the 40. We got to do a better job there with
the kick and then when you talk about game of inches, it’s a game of inches and 35 [CB
Jaylen Watson] had a chance right there. He was right in perfect position. He was off by an
inch and they made the catch and that happens, so still got to bow up and stop them. We
didn’t get that done.”
Q. What did you see on the 99-yard interception return. How did that go awry?
ANDY REID: “Yeah, they popped out. They showed blitz and popped that guy out. Pat
[Patrick Mahomes] didn’t see him and it ended up being an interception.”
Q. I know this is a game you want to win, but with 7.6 yards per play, what do you think
of the offense overall?
ANDY REID: Yeah, listen, I’ve told you this before. As much as these losses hurt, and the
wins, there’s always good and bad in each, things you can learn from it and move forward
with. We got to make sure we do that, but we’ve got to be more disciplined with the penalty
part of it and I’ve got to, obviously, evaluate those and go from there.
Q. On the last scoring drive, what’s the balance of scoring plus clock management?
ANDY REID: Yeah, listen, that’s a tough ask. It’s the number one defense in the National
Football League we’re playing against, so we want to make sure we get in the endzone. I
have full trust in our defense that they, that and special teams take care of business and so
we score. You have to do the best job you possibly can to get into the end zone. I didn’t want
to sit there and have to kick a field goal and do that for sure.
Q. What did you think of the Nick Bolton play at the goal line on Trevor Lawrence?
ANDY REID: I thought it was great. Great play. Both teams were down in there and had
turnovers, so Nick [Bolton] did a nice job and we were alert enough to grab the ball there, so
it was good.
Q. Was there some common denominator you saw, special teams penalties, or what
was going on there?
ANDY REID: No, there wasn’t a common denominator other than a couple of guys got
called twice. We got to just fix the problems with it.
Q. Could you talk about that final touchdown. What were you thinking as you were
seeing the ball twice?
ANDY REID: Yeah, I thought we had him [Trevor Lawrence] there. Yeah, but he’s a
competitor. He had a good day running with his legs.

CHIEFS QUARTERBACK PATRICK MAHOMES

PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, I mean, obviously it sucks. You let a game slip away. Credit to
them. They played hard. They played hard the entire game and they got a lot of good
football players and they closed it out there at the end and so it still sucks when you get a
lead like that and you’re not able to hold it for the rest of the game.
Q. What did you see on the interception return as you look back at it?
PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, honestly they got me with the coverage they played. They
played zero kind of inside that ten-yard area in previous games and they hadn’t shown the
poppers with the linebackers popping out when they’re protected. I think back to a game
against Cincinnati earlier in the year that they had Ja’Marr Chase on a slant route and so I
saw the look. I checked to the play with the in-routes, having three ins knowing that they
were going to try to pass off the guys and JuJu was going to pop wide open and he did but
credit to… they schemed themselves and they kind of looked over what they could do
better and they popped right underneath where I was throwing the ball. Great call by them
defensively and obviously a great play by 0 getting the pick and then I got to find a way to
tackle him or slow him down after he gets the interception.
Q. If that’s the biggest mistake, Patrick, just how much of it is going to nag you guys
when you look back at the amount of penalties you have that stopped your
momentum at times?
PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, it kind of just talks about our whole entire season. I feel like we
have the guys and we’ve executed at certain points in the game and looked really good and
then we kind of crush ourselves with penalties and mistakes and interceptions and
fumbles or whatever that is. It’s just we’ve kind of done that to ourselves all year long. It’s
been one guy here or there and in this league, it’s so close that those change games. We
got to do better. We’ve lost too many games already. We got to find a way to be better as a
team and come together and play better throughout the rest of the season.
Q. How do you think the offensive line is coming together? Zero sacks today.
PATRICK MAHOMES: I thought they did a great job. Offensively we did a great job in certain
parts of the game. When we weren’t hurting ourselves and getting penalties or throwing
interceptions or anything like that. We moved the ball. We were able to move the ball down
the field quickly so I thought the offensive line did a great job. When they’re playing like
that, it’s easy for me to survey the field and I was hitting guys who were second, third,
fourth reads in the progression so if they keep doing that, we’ll keep putting up points, we
just got to find a way to win games there is at the end.
Q. Patrick it’s obviously week to week every game, but did you think after last week
you crossed a certain threshold where you guys are kind of clicking and on a path
where you thought it was going to be straight upward?
PATRICK MAHOMES: I feel like we’ll continue to get better and better. I thought we did a lot
of great things in the game today. We moved the ball, we scored in the red zone and did
what we wanted to there. We just hurt ourselves with penalties. As we continue to clean
that stuff up, we’ll continue to put more and more points on the board. We have another
great challenge this next week. Playing to lions. That’s a great football team who scores a
lot of points themselves and plays with a lot of pride so it’ll be super important for us to go
in with the right mindset knowing it’s going to be a great challenge.
Q. You guys have won a lot of close games in the past, coming down to 13 seconds.
How do you guys get back to that?
PATRICK MAHOMES: I think it’s confidence more than anything. We were able to get that
drive there at the end and get the touchdown to go ahead and I thought defensively they did
a lot of good things. It was two place. It was the big play down the sideline and the pass
interference in the end zone, obviously, and then he trips and runs in. The pass
interference in the end zone sets that up. They’re right there and so there’s two third
downs, third-and-longs. It’s just about closing it out there for us, we got to be better at not
getting in that situation in general offensively and making that mistake early in the third
quarter. It’s just little things here and there but that’s the difference in the game.
Q. I know this is not the result you wanted, but on a per-play basis, offensively you
guys were better than you have been all year. Did it feel that way?
PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, other than the interception and a couple penalties I thought we
did a great job offensively today. That’s a good defense and so we’ll continue to build on
that. We’ll continue to get better at cleaning up the penalties and cleaning up the mistakes
and the interception and turnovers and stuff like that, but I feel like we’re going in the right
direction offensively. Now it’s just about finding ways to win. At the end of the day, it
doesn’t matter how you play if you’re not finding ways to win football games, make winning
plays. So we got to be better at that.
Q. The run game was the best it’s been all year, how much does that help the pass
game?
PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, for sure. You see the play actions and you see the bootlegs that
we were able to run. That comes off the run game and I think that comes with the chemistry
the O-line is building and the chemistry that they’re building with the running backs as well.
That’s stuff that will continue to get better and better over time and we’ll just continue to
work off that as well and try to find ways to make the offense even better.
Q. You were almost dragged down on that go-ahead score (scoring drive) in the fourth
quarter. Just take us through that.
PATRICK MAHOMES: Which one are you talking about?
Q. The one you almost got sacked.
PATRICK MAHOMES: They played a good coverage and that guy got a hand on me and just
tried to stay up. There’s always a little bit of panic when you’re down with your head down
towards the ground. Just playing football, you got to be a competitor. It’s not about being a
quarterback at the end of games like that. It’s about going like that and competing and I
was trying to do that.
Q. That touchdown run, was that two option or how did that…
PATRICK MAHOMES: Yeah, it was read option and there was a couple options for me to
throw the ball as well. How they played their coverage, it turned out like man and so those
guys followed the routes that we were running and obvious guys followed the running
backs and there was no one left for me so it kind of made it easy for me to get into the end
zone. But being able to have that ability, it will help the run game in the long run.

CHIEFS DEFENSIVE TACKLE CHRIS JONES

(On what stood out to him overall) “A little sloppiness and penalties. Overall I think we
had 13 penalties. It’s hard to win a game when your beating yourself in the foot like that.
It’s tough. I think we’ve got to clean up on all phases, the sloppy play, the forced errors by
us. I think if we can get that, we can get back on the right track.”
(On what he saw during Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence’s game-winning touchdown) “I
thought multiple times we had him. We’ve just got to finish. We’ve got to finish. Multiple
guys there that we’ve just got to finish that play. It was a fluke play for him to be able to
break that many tackles. Yeah, I put it on us as a defense. We’ve got to finish. We’ve got to
bring him down on that.”
(On handling the loss) “We’re going to continue to bounce back. We gave this game away
on so many mistakes by us. So many things we could have done differently. Watch film,
we’ve got a quick week, quick turnover for the week coming up. I think this group will
bounce back. I think we’re going to fix the errors that we can control, the penalties. Once
we eliminate the penalties and play disciplined football, I think we’ll put ourselves in good
position to win.”
(On if he felt the game plan was there but execution was lacking) “I think the game plan
was—Spags [Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnulo] dialed up a really, really great game
plan. I think us as a defensive line, other than finishing plays, we’ve got to be a little more
disciplined on our rush lanes. We let Trevor Lawrence get out multiple times today,
especially in the red zone. I think the second touchdown, he ran it in himself. The last
touchdown of the game, he ran it in himself. That’s on the D-line. That’s on the D-line. We’re
rushing four D-linemen, we’ve got to be cognizant on our gaps. One man gets out of the
gap, it widens out. So, for me, I take that personal, containment of the quarterback.”
(On what the key was to forcing a fumble on the goal line) “The key was we knew he was
a jumper, so we go low and let the linebackers go high, and that’s what happened, and we
were able to punch the ball out.”
(On if the team had momentum after the fumble) “Yeah, I think that kind of shifted
momentum. Fourth-down stop, and to come up with a fumble, I think juices were flowing,
giving our offense the opportunity to get the ball back. Put the ball in Pat’s [QB Patrick
Mahomes] hands, we always believe in our offense when Pat has the ball. So far us, we
came off with a high.”
(On if he’s seen improvement from Week 1 to now) “Absolutely. I think we’ve improved
week in and week out. There are still areas you can get better in. There’s still areas you can
improve in. That’s the development of football. You’re always improving, always improving.
Some weeks, you’re going to have a little more adversity where things like penalties creep
up. But we’re going to watch film, we’re going to talk about it, fix our errors and make sure
that we improve next week.”
(On how big of an issue penalties are and if the issue can be solved quickly) “It can be
solved. I think [DT] Derrick Nnadi had a penalty on holding. That’s something that we get
our hand placement right… Holding on 35 [CB Jaylen Watson]. Little things like that, eyes,
discipline, fundamentals, I think we harp on that. I think those guys will go take that to heart
and fix it.”
