Opening statement:
“There were some good things, even though it didn’t come off that way, but the ‘ones’ (starters) I thought
played well when they were in… they were sharp. After that, (we were) too sloppy. Too many penalties
going backwards when you shouldn’t be offensively, and going forward with the penalties we had
defensively. We have to take care of that. 10 penalties for 108 yards… that’s a good rushing day for a
team. You can’t give that up with penalties. I thought the young O-line was a positive. The guys that
worked in there with the ‘ones’ I thought did a nice job for the time they were in… (in) the couple (of)
series they had. (CB Chris) Roland-Wallace… number 30… I thought really played well. He had an
interception (and) he got the fumble recovery on the opening kickoff. (WR Jason) Brownlee with the
touchdown on the fade route in the end zone… a nice catch there. (TE Robert) Tonyan had three catches
for 49 yards, which was a good day… big catches for us. (DB Jaden) Hicks had the pick there, which was
beautiful. (LB Jeremy) Bassa had six tackles (and) seemed to be all over the place… good young player.
(K Harrison) Butker was solid with his kickoffs and the 58-yard field goal… he’s doing well there.”
On what he has seen from Brownlee in Training Camp and how he earned playing time with the
starters tonight:
“He’s played well, so give him an opportunity to get in there and play. He knows how to use his size and
he had some nice plays the rest of the way too. As far as routes… (he) didn’t have the catches, but he
had some good routes there. I thought he was in a position where he deserved to get in there and get
playing time.”
On whether QB Patrick Mahomes wanted to stay in the game longer and support the team on the
sidelines:
“He knew that. I told him they’d get a series if he was lucky. He was going to have a series.”
On what it says about Mahomes that he “stayed in the game” and supported his teammates from
the sidelines:
“You look at these veteran guys… ‘Pat’ (was) leading the charge on that, (TE Travis) Kelce is in there
running up and down, and (DT) Chris (Jones) is running up and down… guys were all over the place, but
they like watching these young guys play and they’re cheering for them. At the same time, they’re trying to
teach them and they’re hard on them when they ‘goof up’ which I’m okay with… peer pressure is good
pressure.”
On S Deon Bush’s injury:
“Bush is an Achilles. He’s going to have surgery; he’ll get double-checked here, but I think we’re looking
at surgery there. It’s too bad because he’s really been playing well… great kid too.”
On LT Josh Simmons’ performance in his first NFL game:
“I wasn’t screaming at him, so I figured he did okay. He looked like he had a solid day, especially for his
first game; he’s been working his tail off. That kid never complains about anything; he just goes. He and
(OL) Kingsley (Suamataia) are trying to develop something over there and they haven’t missed any
snaps. We’ll see how it all works out and sorts out, but I thought for the first time out they did a nice job.”
On QB Gardner Minshew’s performance:
“I thought he did a nice job… managed it (the game) well. He had a couple of those (plays) where he had
to come back. I thought his zero blitz shot was beautiful… he made a big-time play. I thought he had a
solid day. He got a score with his legs and that was great.”
On whether WR Jalen Royals stood out to him today:
“I thought Royals did a good job. Also on special teams, I thought he did well. He did a nice job… strong
runner.”
