10 Quotes to Know From Chiefs 26-10 Win Over Patriots

Coach Reid on how much had to change playing over 24 hours later than expected…

“It’s different. We’re expecting different this year. So, we had to put it together and do it and kind of back up a step there. They sent us home on Saturday, which we understand, and closed the office up. So, we were able to get back in as coaches and work a little bit, but the players weren’t allowed back in up until this date, so they have not been in the building. But there’s no excuse for it. Heck, we had a game plan together and it was just one little obstacle that was in there. They had an obstacle, they had to fly in today, so that’s not an easy thing, plus no quarterback. They were using backup quarterbacks and it was a good experience for those guys, but that’s what it was.”

Coach Reid on what he’s liked from his defense from opening night through Week 4…

“I like the fight in the guys. They don’t get down, they just try to get better. Every play is not going to be a great play, but they don’t flinch on it, they learn from it and then they bring it the next time. So, that becomes an important ingredient throughout a season. Particularly on defense, you have to have a short memory but still learn from the things you had a problem with. So, they’re willing to do that.”

Coach Reid on how the delay affected the team in the first half…

“We were hoping that he might be able to play, but it was tender, so he’s not ready yet. So, we’ll see how it goes this week as we go forward, but he tried. He warmed up and did a little workout and there’s one spot there that’s bothering him, so he’s working through that. Then as far as the timing goes, no, we had the timing. We’ve got to stay onside, we’ve got to hang onto the football, all those things we’ve got to take care of and just play. I didn’t think the day off or anything really hurt us on that, I just think we’ve got to focus a little more as we go forward here.”

Patrick Mahomes on what is it about the Patriots defense that makes them a challenge…

“They have a lot of good veteran players, I think that’s the first thing. When you have good players and you do different schemes and you’re able to do that, you’re usually a pretty good defense. As for us, I feel like especially me, I didn’t execute at a high enough level when you’re playing against a defense like that if you want to go out there and have success.”

Patrick Mahomes on how the postponement affected the team’s focus…

“Obviously it was a little different, but you have to be able to expect the unexpected. I thought guys did a good job of staying focused, but obviously, we didn’t have the success as an offense that we wanted to. Just trying to go into this next week knowing we’re going against a division opponent with a good team and we’re going to have to play our best football if we want to find a way to get a win.”

Patrick Mahomes on team’s resilience to win 13 straight games in different ways…

“As far as being able to win games in different ways, I thought we figured it out last season at the end of it and you have to be able to do that. When you’re in dog fights with teams like this that are known to win games like this, to be able to find ways, offense, defense and special teams and today our defense stepped up, made a lot of big-time plays. Whenever you’re trying to go throughout a season and win as many football games as possible to set you up for the playoffs, you’re going to have to win games like this.”

Patrick Mahomes on the message to the team during the third quarter when it seemed like nothing was working…

“I mean it’s the same thing I always tell them, keep fighting, keep going out there and try to find ways to score. Early in the game we were moving the ball the way we wanted to move it, we were doing stuff the right way and we couldn’t figure out ways to get in the endzone and then they obviously got some stops there in the middle, but I’m proud of how the guys fought at the end of the game. That game easily could’ve went the other direction, they had a lot of the momentum, the defense made some stops and we were able to score whenever it counted.”

Juan Thornhill on his interception…

“Pretty much, on the interception, I was just playing football. I was in my half and I saw the quarterback looking at number two and the ball came and I just went up and made the play. I was too determined to make that play because I let some opportunities slip in the past weeks, so I just couldn’t let that one go. So, I definitely had to get that ball…I was just too determined. I let one slip last week and then I had to go get this one. I just wanted to go get the ball and I think I wanted it more than the receiver did. Then, when I caught it, I really wanted to score. That was the main goal, just to get in the endzone, but I saw too many white jerseys coming my way. Usually, when guys cut back, that’s when bad things happen, so I just ran out of bounds.”

Taco Charlton on his big strip sack of Brian Hoyer and his ability to knock the ball out…

“I mean, that’s the good thing about having long arms, being able to reach around people. As I was coming around the corner, I saw he still had the ball right in front of me, so I knew it was a perfect opportunity for me to come around with my arms and knock the ball out. I saw the ball out and I decided to pull his arms back and hopefully one of our guys would come up with it, and that’s what happened. I made a big play and we were able to score off it and capitalize.”

Taco Charlton on Kansas City and Chiefs Kingdom…

“Of course the unity, the comradery, the brotherhood of the organization—not even the team, but the organization as a whole and the team. Then, like I said, I’m just here to pick up off the next guy. A lot of great ends, a lot of great rushers—when they’re out, I try to make something happen for this team and trying to help this team win games. I’m a new guy, so of course I want to be a big part of the repeat and us running it back, so I try to get in there and make plays to help us win games.”
