100 Year Celebration of WHB

An Epic 100 Year Celebration for WHB Radio

Sports Radio 810 WHB celebrates history, hosts the biggest night in Kansas City sports entertainment

Overland Park, KS (June 23rd, 2022) – This summer, Sports Radio 810 WHB is hosting “WHB’s 100 Year Celebration” commemorating 100 years of radio broadcasting in Kansas City. The months long celebration culminates with a finale event in a celebration of sports, entertainment, and broadcasting at the historic Midland Theatre on Thursday, August 11, 2022.

WHB is one of Kansas City’s oldest radio stations, originally established by Sam Adair and John T. Schilling in 1922. In addition to being known as an inventor of the “Top 40” format (WHB is distinguished for being the first station in the country to play Top 40 music 24-hours a day), WHB had some of the most popular personalities in the business including prolific DJs Gene Woody, Johnny Dolan and Phil Jay who commanded the “WHB Air Force.” Of note, WHB was one of the presenting sponsors for The Beatles only visit to Kansas City and created the historic WHB Beatle Book.

WHB was also a pioneer in the talk radio format with the late-night program “Nite Beat.” Using a multi-line system invented by WHB iconic engineer Dale Moody, disc jockeys and hosts could field calls from across the Midwest as guests from all walks of life visited the studio. WHB was one of the first stations to use melodic and catchy jingles to remind listeners which radio station they were hearing. Those jingles sometimes referred to WHB as the “World’s Happiest Broadcasters.”

In October of 1999, Sports Radio 810 WHB signed on the air as America’s Largest All-Sports Radio Station. WHB’s on-air lineup has since won countless awards from ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Kansas City Sports Commission and is recognized annually by Barrett Sports Media in all five major categories (Top Morning Show, Top Midday Show, Top Afternoon Show, Top Program Director, Top Radio Station). This past year, WHB was named Media Mix Kansas City Radio Station of the Year.

On August 11th, 2022 Sports Radio 810 WHB will host an event to honor the storied history of the station as well as the past year’s achievements of Kansas City area athletes and teams, at the high school, college and professional levels. The night will benefit the greater Kansas City sports community through scholarships and 100% of the funds raised both from a silent and live auction

going directly to nonprofit donations. Big Brothers Big Sisters, ALS Association, Victory Project, and ShareWaves have been named beneficiaries.

A two hour, fast paced and engaging production promises to provide a unique and exclusive guest experience to celebrate the greatest sports moments in Kansas City history. The event will also include live music and performance features, celebrity appearances and interviews, a VIP red carpet experience, crafted cocktails and opportunities to rub elbows with Kansas City’s elite athletes, coaches and executives. The all-time great callers of Sports Radio 810 WHB will also be invited to attend. Tickets are available through sponsorship. There will be a limited number of free tickets to the general public given away through WHB and its sponsors.
