The new Sporting Kansas City team of 2020 is slowly but surely taking shape.
During the 2020 expansion draft Tuesday night, which featured Major League Soccer’s two newest clubs, Nashville SC and Inter Miami CF, Sporting Kansas City saw two players go to Nashville, one by trade and one through the expansion draft.
Versatile defender Jimmy Medranda, who selected by Nashville as the 10th and final pick of the draft, while goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas – who had been protected by Sporting ahead of the draft – was traded.
In return for Zendejas, Sporting received $125,000 in 2020 Targeted Allocation Money, $50,000 in 2020 General Allocation Money and an international roster spot for the 2020 season.
Here’s what Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes had to say, in a statement released by the team, following the draft:
“We’d like to thank Adrian and Jimmy for all of their contributions to the club over the past several years,” said Peter Vermes, Sporting KC’s manager and sporting director. “We wish them all the best in their future careers.”
Sporting will announce their next round of roster moves, including exercised and declined contract options for players heading into the 2020 MLS season, by Thursday (11/21).
