LIVE Transfer Talk: Goretzka joins Saul, Camavinga on Manchester United's shortlist

The summer transfer window is into its final month for the major European leagues,  which means the biggest clubs are looking to make a splash in the market before the new season begins. Check out the latest gossip below, and see all official deals here.

TOP STORY: Man United keen to sign Goretzka

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to the Daily Mail.

United have been contemplating a number of big midfield targets in case Paul Pogba leaves, and Goretzka is one of several options also including Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez and 18-year-old Rennes star Eduardo Camavinga.

United have already added Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to their squad for over £110 million in what has been a successful summer so far in the transfer market.

However, the bad news for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is that it is reported that Goretzka would prefer to stay in Germany and extend his contract beyond 2022 rather than move to Old Trafford.

The influential Goretzka has won 10 trophies since joining Bayern from Schalke in 2018, including three Bundesliga titles and one Champions League.

Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is new to the Bayern hot seat, and he is optimistic he can persuade the Germany international to stay at the Allianz Arena for the next few years.

20.58 BST: Inter Miami winger Matias Pellegrini is on his way back to Estudiantes in his native Argentina, having joined on loan until June 2022.

The 21-year-old originally moved in the opposite direction back in July 2019 and had one goal and four assists in MLS last year, but has not been on Miami's active roster in 2021.

20.14 BST: If Kieran Trippier leaves Atletico Madrid this summer -- Manchester United is a possible destination, according to reports -- the Spanish champions have a potential replacement lined up in River Plate's Gonzalo Montiel, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The 24-year-old has won 13 caps for Argentina and started his country's Copa America final win against Brazil last month.

Montiel's River contract expires at the end of 2022 and he appears to be in high demand, with MD also suggesting that Benfica are interested.

19.29 BST: Southampton have completed the signing of Chelsea youngster Tino Livramento on a five-year deal.

The 18-year-old full-back won Academy Player of the Year at Stamford Bridge last season and has been hailed as "one of the best young players in his position in the country" by Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. 

Livramento is Saints' second incomer from Chelsea of the off-season, following the arrival last week of Dynel Simeu.

18.57 BST: Is Cristian Romero finally set to seal a move to Tottenham?

The Argentina defender has been linked with a move to North London for several weeks and Calciomercato.com reports that the "operation is in the final stages" to finalise a deal for the 23-year-old.

Meanwhile, lined up to replace him at Atalanta is Juventus' Merih Demiral, according to Fabrizio Romano.

18.26 BST: Our lead story mentioned Saul Niguez as an alternative to Leon Goretzka for Manchester United, but it appears nothing is imminent with regard to the Atletico Madrid man.

Jonathan Shrager tweeted that, while an enquiry has been made regarding the 26-year-old midfielder, it was not done recently. 

17.48 BST: AC Milan will reject any offers to take Daniel Maldini on loan, according to reports in Italy. Calciomercato.com claims a recent loan bid from Spezia was turned down for the 19-year-old.

Maldini is following in the footsteps of his father Paolo and grandfather Cesare in representing the Rossoneri although, unlike his defender relations, he is an attacking midfielder and has made seven Serie A appearances since his debut in 2020.

Brahim Diaz's arrival on loan from Real Madrid will make game time harder to come by, but Paolo, now a director having made a record 902 appearances for the club, believes it is in his son's best interests to stay.

17.00 BST: After signing Jadon Sancho and with a deal agreed for Raphael Varane, Man United have to win titles. Can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deliver? Rob Dawson examines.

Trophies aren't handed out in July, but Manchester United have at least used the summer to show they remain interested in winning some.

Toward the end of his time as manager at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho came to believe the club were happy simply to compete in the big competitions -- United haven't won a trophy in any competition since 2017 -- rather than win them. After walking into one press conference to find no drink for him on the desk, he quipped: "No water? Are we saving money for the transfer window?"

His conversations with owners the Glazers and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in the summer of 2018 were not so light-hearted. Having finished second in the Premier League behind Manchester City, he expected significant investment to bridge the gap. It never arrived, reinforcing Mourinho's personal view that the will to compete with Europe's top clubs wasn't there, and after a complete breakdown in relations he was gone by December.

Last season, United again finished second behind City, but instead of sitting on their hands, the funds have been released and reinforcements have arrived.

16.34 BST: Fabrizio Romano says that Man United need to sort out the future of Diogo Dalot before they make a move for Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier.

AC Milan are keen to sign Dalot again after his loan last season, but United want a €5m fee plus an option for the Serie A side to make the deal permanent.

United want to sign England international Trippier, but Atletico reportedly want £30m to let him go which could prove too much for United.

Romano claims that reports Atletico are lining up Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi to replace Trippier are wide of the mark.

16.02 BST: Chelsea REALLY want to sign Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku, says The Athletic.

The report states that "Chelsea have made two bids for the 28-year-old so far, which is a strong signal of intent. It also provides an indication of where they now see their chances of acquiring [Dortmund striker Erling] Haaland."

Lukaku scored 24 goals to help Inter win Serie A last season, but has a tricky history with the Blues after signing from Anderlecht for £18m in 2011 and then only playing 15 times (scoring no goals) for Chelsea in the three years after that. He moved to Everton in 2014, then to Man United for £90m  in 2017, but it would be understandable if the Belgium international now wanted to stay in Italy where he has managed 64 goals in 95 games.

15.32 BST: PSG defender Thilo Kehrer has caught the eye of various Bundesliga sides: Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach, says Footmercato.

Kehrer, 24, signed from Schalke for a €37m fee in 2018 but could now be slipping down the pecking order after the arrival of Sergio Ramos in Paris.

The Germany international is reportedly keen to move on and may choose to return to his homeland, with no shortage of options at his disposal.

14.51 BST: ESPN sources said on Wednesday that Chelsea and Sevilla had entered talks over a deal worth around €70m that will take defender Jules Kounde to Stamford Bridge this summer.

But now Goal Brasil claims that Chelsea are trying to include winger Kenedy into the deal to lower the fee.

Brazilian club Flamengo want to take Kenedy on loan but now have to wait to see if Sevilla want him.

14.30 BST: Will Harry Kane get his move from Tottenham this summer?

14.02 BST: Fabrizio Romano reports that 36-year-old defender Giorgio Chiellini is set to sign a new contract with Juventus until June 2023.

Chiellini starred for Italy this summer to help them win Euro 2020 and he could now be included in the national team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

13.38 BST: Goal reports that Leeds United are considering a move for Wolves winger Adama Traore.

Traore, 25, has been unable to agree a new contract at Wolves and could be on the move this summer.

Liverpool have also been linked with the former Barcelona academy graduate, but Leeds are eyeing a shock move by offering Wolves £30m to sign him.

12.46 BST: Despite a fine season at Everton, James Rodriguez doesn't feature in new manager Rafael Benitez's plans, says The Liverpool Echo.

Rodriguez, 30, is free to leave if the club receives a suitable offer, having netted six goals in 26 games since arriving from Real Madrid in 2020.

The Colombia playmaker should have plenty of admirers, with AC Milan reportedly at the front of the queue.

12.23 BST: Monaco forward Henry Onyekuru is set to join Greek champions Olympiakos, according to the French club.

Onyekuru, 24, has spent two years on loan at Galatasaray and the Nigeria international will now head to Greece.

12.00 BST: Man City are confident they have done enough to lure Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, sources have told ESPN's Rob Dawson.

According to sources close to the midfielder, Grealish has been torn over his decision to leave his boyhood club this summer but there is a growing belief at the Etihad Stadium that the 25-year-old will be their player before the start of their new season against Tottenham on Aug. 15.

Sources said that the chance to play Champions League football and challenge for trophies at City is key to his willingness to leave Aston Villa.

11.52 BST: In other news around transfer targets returning to their clubs, Sky Sports reports that Jack Grealish is back training at Aston Villa today.

Sources told ESPN that Villa were informed on Friday that Manchester City are willing to pay £90m to sign the 25-year-old midfielder, while highly rated City winger Morgan Rogers has also been proposed as part of the deal.

City value Rogers, 19, at around £10m, bringing the overall outlay close to Villa's £100m valuation of Grealish.

Villa are keen to keep their captain, but sources have told ESPN that the decision will be left to the player.

11.39 BST: UPDATE - Harry Kane failed to report back to Tottenham for preseason training on Monday morning as he attempts to force through a move away from the club, sources have told ESPN's James Olley.

The 28-year-old was due at Hotspur Way for COVID-19 testing and routine blood work after an extended break following England's run to the final of Euro 2020. However, Kane chose not to attend in a move which represents an escalation in the stand-off between the striker and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, having previously expressed his desire to leave the club this summer.

Manchester United and Chelsea are monitoring the situation, but sources have told ESPN that Manchester City are the front-runners and are hopeful of completing a deal.

Levy is reluctant to let his star player go, however, given Kane's importance to the team and the fact he has three years remaining on his £200,000-a-week contract in north London.

Kane believes he has a gentleman's agreement with Levy which would see the club listen to appropriate offers this summer. However, Tottenham value Kane at around £150m -- a figure City have so far proved unwilling to match.

Kane's failure to report back is a major disruption to Tottenham's preseason plans ahead of their first Premier League game, which comes against City at home on Aug. 15.

11.13 BST: Do Chelsea have a new right wing-back?

Manager Thomas Tuchel has hinted Christian Pulisic is open to featuring more regularly there this season following his change of role in the preseason friendly win over Arsenal.

Pulisic started the match at the Emirates Stadium, which Chelsea won 2-1, in a deeper role on the right wing before being replaced by Ross Barkley on 64 minutes.

Asked whether Pulisic's change of role was a one-off or could become a more permanent switch, Tuchel told CBS Sports: "Maybe, maybe. He played with me in Dortmund and he played it many times."

10.45 BST: Tottenham striker Harry Kane has not shown up for training this morning, says Sky Sports.

Kane, 28, wants to leave the club and was due to return from holiday today. Manchester City have been linked with a £100m move for the England captain.

10.21 BST: Arsenal handed over £50m to sign Brighton defender Ben White.

09.46 BST: Tuttosport seems to think that Atletico Madrid can afford to sign Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez.

Martinez, 23, almost moved to Barcelona last year but is valued at around €90m by his financial-stricken club and could move on this summer.

Oddly, Arsenal have been linked and the report claims Atletico have moved ahead of the Gunners to sign the Argentina international. But neither club has €90m to spend on one player.

09.15 BST: Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are working on having Lionel Messi in the team before the Joan Gamper trophy on Sunday.

Messi would have returned to train with Barcelona today had his new deal with the Catalan giants been signed and registered. Barca have an agreement with Messi but the deal has yet to be made official, with 13 days to go before they start La Liga.

According to reports, Messi will not return to training until the new deal is made official. Messi, who won the Copa America with Argentina, is on holiday in Ibiza with his family and his friend Luis Suarez.

When asked about Messi's situation, club president Joan Laporta recently reassured fans and said "everything is going as expected, it's progressing adequately."

Barca are working on reducing their wage bill to register Messi and remain within the league-imposed salary cap. But La Liga president Javier Tebas insists no exceptions will be made. He said: "I speak to Barca regarding Messi and I ask them how things are going. They tell me that they have hopes that a certain player leaves or that another one stays and reduces his salary. That is the only information I have but by no means are we talking about modifying the rules so that Messi stays at Barcelona."

08.54 BST: Barcelona have given an ultimatum to Ilaix Moriba to sign new contract this week, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The teenage midfielder was left out of Barca's squad last week to travel to Germany for preseason tour. He has been demoted to train with the B-team because he has not signed a new contract with Barca with his current deal ending next summer.

Barca are awaiting a response from Ilaix's agents regarding the latest offer, an improved three-year deal, presented to the player.

Moriba, 18, has until Sunday to accept the deal or risk playing for the reserves next season. The Barcelona starlet has attracted the attention of several clubs in Europe after he exploded onto Barca's first-team scene towards the end of last season, scoring or assisting in each of his first three appearances in La Liga and running out 18 times in total for Ronald Koeman's side.

08.30 BST: ICYMI - Aston Villa have announced that they have reached a deal with Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of Leon Bailey.

The winger had a productive 2020-21 season in the Bundesliga, scoring nine goals and assisting nine more. Villa confirmed in a statement that an agreement had been made with Leverkusen, subject to him completing a medical and finalising personal terms.

- Arsenal and Liverpool are battling for midfielder Manuel Locatelli in light of the news that Juventus are struggling to meet Sassuolo's £34m demands, according to Sky Italia. The Gunners have been tracking the 23-year-old for well over a year, while Liverpool are on the lookout for a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. Juventus and Sassuolo officials have met three times in an effort to facilitate a move, but they are yet to reach an agreement.

- Barcelona continue to try and freshen up their squad, and it appears as though defender Samuel Umtiti has agreed to leave on loan, though he has stated he wants a top club, according to Sport. The French defender has stipulated that he would like to choose his next destination, and that is likely to be a Champions League club or a side with a chance of challenging for silverware. The 27-year-old's chances of playing regularly at Camp Nou next season appear to be very slim.

- West Ham United manager David Moyes is looking to add defensive cover to his squad, and while Chelsea's Kurt Zouma is high on his list, a move for Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic appears more likely, according to Sky Sports. A bid for Zouma could mean West Ham having to find £25m, plus his wages, while Milenkovic has only one year left on his contract, which means the 23-year-old Serbia international is likely to be the more cost-effective -- and easier -- move.

- Striker Joshua Zirkzee is on the verge of joining Anderlecht on loan from Bayern Munich, with the move expected to be announced next week, according to Fabrizio Romano. Italian side Hellas Verona were also said to be keen, but Vincent Kompany's team have raced ahead in the battle for his signature. Negotiations between Anderlecht and Bayern are at the final stages, with a loan move until June 2022 close to being agreed.

- Davinson Sanchez is in talks over a move to Sevilla, according to an interview with his agent, Nestor Villarreal, and Colombian radio station Caracol. Sanchez, 25, has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur and, despite the departure of Toby Alderweireld, Sanchez appears keen to join Julen Lopetegui's side. It is thought the Spanish side are keen on the central defender as a potential replacement for Jules Kounde, who is in talks with Chelsea according to ESPN sources. Tottenham, meanwhile, are pursuing centre-back Cristian Romero from Atalanta in a move that would surely limit Sanchez's chances.

- Crystal Palace are hoping to sign winger Ademola Lookman on loan for the season from RB Leipzig, according to the Sun. New manager Patrick Vieira is looking to strengthen his squad and has identified Lookman as one of his targets, though the 23-year-old is also attracting interest from Burnley and Watford. Leipzig are looking for a £3.5m loan fee, plus wages of £50,000-a-week which, while too much for the Clarets and Hornets, is within Vieira's budget. Lookman enjoyed a successful season on loan at Fulham last season, playing 34 league matches.
