OFFICIAL HOST BIO: Steven St. John was born and raised in the Northeast neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. St. John graduated from St. Pius X High School in 1990 before attending Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for 2 years. St. John transferred to UMKC where he graduated with an English degree in 1996. No, the math doesn’t add up…six years for a four-year degree. Well, at least he graduated.
When St. John was a senior at UMKC, he competed in the Kansas City Golden Gloves before enjoying a brief professional boxing career (1-0, 1 KO). After graduating from UMKC, St. John stopped boxing and started to look for a real job.
Over the next few years, St. John was fired from such places as Gateway Computers, Blue Cross Blue Shield and even Jeans West at The Landing shopping mall. During this time, St. John also worked as a site coordinator for the R.B.I youth baseball program and at the Kansas City Zoo, as a host for the Nocturnal Safari program and as one of those guys that walks around holding possums and hissing cockroaches (true story).
Finally, St. John found a job he liked at The Journal Herald newspaper in Shawnee, Kansas. He covered high school sports, school board meeting, police blotters and pie-eating contests. St. John was featured on an episode of “Hard Copy” for a story he wrote that helped solve an 18-year-long murder mystery (another true story).
In 1998, St. John met Union Broadcasting President Chad Boeger in the Kauffman Stadium press box and proceeded to badger Boeger over the next few months with phone calls and postcards until Boeger allowed St. John on the airwaves of Sports Radio 1510. St. John’s first gig was a weekly boxing segment on Boeger’s afternoon show. St. John was able to parlay that into a weekly boxing show that he co-hosted with his close friend, the late Randie Carver, the finest boxer ever to come out of Kansas City.
In 1999, St. John was hired to host the evening show on Sports Radio 810 WHB. “The Steven St. John Show” boasted hundreds of listeners and was on the air for 2 years before St. John was promoted to morning drive as co-host of “Jason Whitlock’s Neighborhood” for 3 years. St. John then took a chance and made the switch to the FM dial where he co-hosted morning drive on 97.3 the Planet with Randy Miller, then Doug Medlock.
After that blew up in his face, St. John was welcomed back to WHB as the host of “The Border Patrol” with Bob Fescoe. After Fescoe left for a job in the military, St. John joined forces with Nate Bukaty to form a band the likes of which have never been seen and they call themselves Tenacious D. Ok, that’s a lie. The show is still called “The Border Patrol”, but now it kicks ass thanks to the efforts of Lead Producer Aaron Swarts and Technical Producer, Jake Gutierrez.
