From the mind of Steven St. John

  • Missouri desperately needed a win over Texas on Wednesday night and the Tigers didn’t disappoint. Mizzou handled the Longhorns 82-77 in a crossroads game in the Big 12 that left Mike Anderson’s squad feeling much better about their NCAA tournament chances. Keith Ramsey was the MVP of the game with an inspired 12 point, 11 rebound effort that sparked the Tigers against a team that should have enjoyed a big advantage down low against the Tigers. In fact, Mizzou outscored Texas in the paint 44-30 despite being out-rebounded 42-38. Missouri also dominated Texas in fast-break points with a 14 to two advantage. But, perhaps the biggest key was the Tigers 25-10 tilt in points off turnovers. Another impressive aspect of this victory was the fact that Mizzou only took four 3-point shots in the second half after hitting on only one of nine attempts in the first half. Once again, the Tigers proved that they are at their best offensively when they are driving the basketball and getting to the free-throw line as opposed to settling for shots from long-range. Kim English was very efficient with 18 points in only 23 minutes, while Mike Dixon may have had his best game as a Tiger with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Now, Mizzou must refocus and prepare for a tough game in Lincoln this Saturday against Doc Sadler’s Cornhuskers. If anyone thought Nebraska had given up on their season after last week’s 40-point loss in Austin, those thoughts were dismissed with the Huskers near upset of Kansas State. If Missouri can pull off another win on Saturday in Lincoln, Mizzou fans can stop talking about being on the bubble and start talking about what seed the Tigers will be getting in the Big Dance.

  • It was good to see Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin in attendance at the Mizzou-Texas game. Hopefully, Daniel took the opportunity to have a little talk with current Tigers quarterback Blaine Gabbert about leadership, commitment and how not to end up in the wrong situation at 1:30 in the morning. I’m guessing if they had dinner, it wasn’t at Gumby’s Pizza.

  • A couple of days ago, I was so excited about the pending return of baseball season, I spent some time analyzing Trey Hillman’s first offering of what the Royals new look line-up might look like come opening day. Like I said, I was excited about the return of baseball season. When is the NFL draft again?
